Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) non-profit
group dedicated to providing a No-Kill environment for abandoned and abused cats and dogs in Sussex County, Delaware.
This summer, we will start construction
of our No-Kill sanctuary for 400 cats and dogs on Shingle Point Road between Georgetown and Milton.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved a Rural Development loan in March for our building. After the construction
start, the General Contractor is required to finish the building in 10 months, weather permitting.
This Spring, the Safe Haven Board of Directors re-engineeed the
building to comply with U.S. Department of Agriculture loan criteria. The sanctuary's design integrity and the animal
care functions for 400 cats and dogs have been retained. The "green" components and the appearance of the
buildings have been preserved. Due to the re-engineering, it was necessary to go out for bids again. The bids were received
on May 20, 2010. Since then, we worked with USDA on selection of the General Contractor firm which will construct the
sanctuary in the coming year.

With a proactive adoption policy, we expect to care for about 2,000 animals
annually in our sanctuary. The animals who cannot be quickly adopted will receive long-term housing or will live
out their natural lives at Safe Haven.
"As a true No-Kill shelter, no cats or dogs will be put down unless they have untreatable and unmanageable
medical conditions that cause pain which can not be controlled," says Executive Director Anne Gryczon, who has been
working for Safe Haven for 3 years. "The model for Safe Haven is Best Friends in Utah, which has been
proving since the 1980s that the No-Kill philosophy works. Safe Haven is completely committed to the Best Friends
approach."
Animal-Centered
Design Safe Haven's design is unique because it will minimize the stress of the cats and dogs living there,
while keeping operational costs at a minimum. The cage-free indoor living spaces for 400 cats and dogs are heated, cooled,
and full of natural light from windows that can be opened in good weather. Compatible dogs will be paired up, and several
cats will be in each cat room to prevent isolation. There will also be areas where cats and dogs can interact with volunteers
and people interested in adopting pets. More on our building...

Safe
Haven Supported by Delaware
Congressional Delegation
We are extremely grateful
to all of Safe Haven's supporters and we want to extend special thanks to our Congressional Delegation. Senator Thomas
Carper, Senator Ted Kaufman, and Congressman Mike Castle were very helpful in the USDA loan application process. Safe
Haven also wishes to thank the Longwood Foundation and Welfare Foundation of Wilmington for their grants. In addition, we
are always full of gratitude to our donors and volunteers who have worked so hard to bring a true No-Kill sanctuary to Sussex
County.
Bipartisan
Congressional Support
Senator Thomas Carper (D): “I have always supported animal protection bills, and understand the importance of protecting these innocent
creatures who cannot speak for them-selves. Safe Haven Sanctuary will serve as a model for others to follow.”
Senator Ted Kaufman
(D): “I wish the best of luck as the
sanctuary breaks ground, creates jobs, and begins caring for the many hungry and abandoned animals in Sussex County.” Congressman Mike Castle
(R): “Safe Haven's "green"
sanctuary will not only house needy animals, and benefit families in the community, but will also help boost the local economy.”
